What do Consumers Dislike about Cookouts?

I formed a group of people and developed first hand experience with barbecues and cookouts. I then surveyed forums like "r/bbq" to gather insights.

01. There is always one "grill master" who is too busy grilling.
02. Same old grill recipes leave much to be desired.

Insight - Consumers want Uninterrupted Social Engagement

Keep the Conversation Going:
Consumers love having grill-side conversations. They would stand next to grill, away from their table, to talk to the "grill master."

More Recipies to Prepare for:
Consumers are willing to spend money and time to prepare new recipes to branch from conventional grill recipes. They would purchase new cookout accessories for smoking, baking, and drinks.

Target Consumers

Socially Engaged & Gift Giving (according to 2024 Inspired Home Show)
01. Ages between 25-44
02. Hold seasonal barbecues with 3-6 people
03. Actively celebrate life events and gifting
04. Affinity for home cooking

Market - Cookout Accessories $100-$150

Competitive landscape from consumers' point of view revealed an opportunity in the cookout accessory market. Price point is decided based on the gift giving and leisure trend of our target consumers.

Finding the Ideal Accessory

Stacker Concept:
Engages users with dual cooking methods (griddle and oven).

Light House Concept:
Engages users in a warm zone and keeps their food warm without going back to the grill.

Ondol Concept:
Stone bed food heater is a more stylish food warmer that fits warm and friendly atmosphere.

Luxury (William Sonoma style) Direction

Rugged (Weber style) Direction - this was the final direction. Users appreciated its compatibility with existing Weber style grills and its honest form factor.

Prototyping

I prototypes and tested four different shells and 14 different handles for the best human factors and grilling experience.

Collaborate with your party on more than your good old barbecue by sharing awesome pizza recipes.

On a Grill or a Fire Pit

Simple but Powerful

With lateral research with similar market products, I resolved the technical question around the heat convection.
Heat convection allowed simple but powerful solution for Decker.

Safety, Of Course

As mentioned, 14 handles were designed and tested. Achieving trustworthy safety feature was a big challenge by itself. The hand guard and coil handle offer affordable yet elegant method to distribute heat and prevent any accidental contact with the hot shell.
